Partners
As a consortium, the Geriatric Education Center of Michigan (GECM) at Michigan State University (MSU) has formal partnership arrangements with other academic institutions and health systems within Michigan.

These collaborative relationships afford the GECM an opportunity to deliver its geriatric education programs more widely throughout our large state. Each of the following six GECM goals represents combined efforts of the Michigan State University (MSU) GECM faculty and one or more of its partners.

The GECM faculty and staff work collaboratively to improve health care to older adults by focusing on the following currently-funded objectives:

  • Expand GECM educational modules on functional assessment and provide 40 hours of comprehensive geriatric training to a minimum of regional 8 interdisciplinary trainings teams with a minimum of 4 health professional per team across Michigan utilizing multiple educational modalities.
  • Support the above-named geriatrics training teams to provide 12 hours of interdisciplinary geriatric training within their geographic areas to a minimum of 15 health professionals per team.
  • Modify current curricula focused on outpatient settings and building on existing relationships with the VA-VISN 11 to deliver inpatient primary care geriatrics, team-building and CQI training to a minimum of 5 facilities over 3 year period.
  • Develop and implement a 25-hour interdisciplinary geriatric health literacy program emphasizing the training/retraining of health professions faculty, with a goal of at least 10 completers per year from public four-year universities throughout Michigan
  • Deliver annual CME/CEU approved educational offerings to disseminate interdisciplinary geriatric and gerontological training information to a minimum of 500 multidisciplinary health professionals annually
  • Provide geriatrics clinical training to 250 health professions students per year
